Textures of Tokyo

Vast, eclectic, and ever evolving, Tokyo is metropolis meets village, urban jungle meets sublime detail. It’s a delicious blend of future and tradition, fast and slow, cacophony and calm.

From above, the city looks like eternal urban sprawl. In fact it is a collection of neighborhoods, each with different characteristics and atmosphere. Most of the city remains “human scale,” ie, not yet a forest of skyscrapers. Wander around tiny winding lanes and you’ll discover an impossibly charming cafe next to a mom and pop traditional sweet shop next to the neighborhood tatami seller next to an award-winning pizza chef. Individually unassuming and collectively a rich community steeped in local flavor.
